review 1: I hadn't read anything by Nicci French before. It was.... good, but not great. I really liked the main character of Freida - I think it must be hard to write a character like her. She's so analytical and unemotional. I appreciated that, and I also appreciated that it was a woman. Usually those characters are written as men. There's a lot brought in from the previous book, so it's possible I would have enjoyed it somewhat more if I'd read the first one. The authors do a good job of summarizing but I imagine there was feeling of dread that I was missing.
review 2: I liked this second installment of the series better than the first. Perhaps because there was so much set up in the first that I didn't really feel the impact of the mystery either in terms of the plot... more itself or the effect it would have further on. Some series you can read hit or miss, but this one you're going to need to read in order. Since there are seven days in the week, I assume that there are going to be seven books in the series. Looking forward to seeing how the authors sort this one out. less
