review 1: This book was recommended to me by my roommate. He gave me a short explanation of the plot, and that was enough to capture my attention. I picked it up as soon as I could, and wasn't able to put it back down until I reached the end.The story takes place in a world where corelings (demon-like monsters) rise from the ground every night when the sun sets. These demons terrorize towns and villages, leaving death everywhere they go. People have been living in fear of the night for as long as they can remember. The only defense people have against these monsters is the use of magical symbols called wards which can forms nets of protection and keep the demons out. However, warding is a precise and delicate art, and imperfect wards can leave openings which demons can pass through.... more These defensive wards are all people have left, even though stories tell of old warriors with offensive wards with which they could fight the corelings.In Brett's universe, anyone can tap into the magic of warding. However, it's a skill that takes a lifetime to master. People have turned warding into a craft alongside smithing and milling.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new fantasy/sci-fi series to read.
review 2: Strhující příběh plný rozličných zvratů. Ač je výsledek mnohdy snadno uhádnutelný, autor nedává hrdinům nic zdarma. Každé vítězství a každá radost jsou draze zaplaceny mnoha prohrami a pády, což dává knize (i přes všechny démony a magii) punc reálnosti. Situace nastíněná z pohledu několika rozličných postav, z nichž žádná není pouze černá či bílá. Postav, která si každá prožila svůj příběh, své šťastné i nešťastné momenty a učinila nejedno závažné rozhodnutí.Kniha dobrá jak pro ty, co si chtějí u čtení odpočinout a pobavit se, i pro ty, co v řádcích i mezi nimi hledají něco víc. less
