review 1: This book was twice as long as it could have been and by the time I finished I found it tedious. The characters keep agonizing over unanswered questions which are asked over and over again. I enjoyed the first few books of the Monk series by Anne Perry; however I feel that they tend to be repetitive the more I read them; the same basic plot told over and over again. I will not be reading any more for some time.
review 2: This was good as there was 2 plots that were combined at the end. A known drug "Opium" was consider Ok until usage with needles caused an "Opium War", question to solve when reading is what is the difference when taken orally -or- with a needle? Next Dr.Joel Lambourn & Zenia Gadney are found dead. While Dinah Lambourn is the widow. Enter Hester
... more as she finds the real mistress, murderer & wife and why is Dr. Joel Lambourn's research involved. The end may need two readings as there are many in "character roles" and another character in the book may also be involved someway? less
