Inspector Erlendur
review 1: I'm surprised this has such a high rating here. Arnaldur's a thoughtful writer and I like his detective, but this particular book is lacking in suspense and has a predictable plot. It feels like there's no particular hurry to solve these (apparently disconnected but OF COURSE related) cases, since Erlandur is investigating them in his own time, without permission of his department. His interactions with suspects and witnesses feel repetitive and bloodless. Maybe it's an Icelandic fascination, but not shared by me: the victim's interest in the afterlife and seances. Not without its merits, however: Erlandur has complicated relationships with his children and ex-wife.
review 2: I read this book in the Dutch translation ('Verdwijnpunt'). At least I think it is the
... more same book ... I'm not a real fan of police novels, but I am making an exception for this author who has consistently produced first class work, with its brilliantly crafted protagonist, who spends more time battling his own ghosts than solving crimes. Technically, there is not even a crime in this novel, or if there is one, it has no real bearing on the theme of the novel, the guilt Erlendur feels for the disappearance of his younger brother in a blizzard many years ago. The bleakness of the Icelandic landscape, the gruff people and their stoic attitude to life, only showing their emotions when it is too late and tragedy is inevitable - an irresistible mix that kept me captivated. less
