October Daye
review 1: I'm a huge fan of Mira Grant's Feed series. (Side note: Mira Grant and Seanan McGuire = same person.) It was only recently I discovered she'd written an urban fantasy series featuring fae. October "Toby" Daye is a changeling - half fae/human. She thought she had both parts of her life well sorted until going "missing" for 14 years. Since her return, she's shut herself off from all sides, human and fae, and is simply attempting to survive. Circumstances throw her back into the fray. She finds herself forced to solve a murder, protect a rare and powerful artifact, and reconnect with all those she's been ignoring since her return. I enjoyed the book and will absolutely read the next of the series. Unfortunately, I couldn't rate this one higher. It suffers from first book synd... morerome - a poor balance between all the info dumping about the world and her quest to find the killer(s). That being said, I could have used some more info dumping or at least better descriptors about the world. Parts of the world, the way magic works within it, and even locations left me with an incomplete picture. Other reviewers point out that these issues are corrected in later books, so I look forward to exploring this world more.
review 2: As I've said in my review of the paper edition, Toby Daye is a series I can happily revisit time and time again, on an average of two full series re-reads a year. I think having it in audiobook may add a third to that, since I'll now be able to carry it with me on my phone and listen to it on the bus, instead of trying to read from paper or e-book, which unfortunately make me motion-sick, where audiobooks don't seem to. I love Mary Robinette Kowal's narration of the whole series, and especially that she does her best to pin all the characters' accents down as they should be (I suppose it helps to be a friend of the author in this case! :)). less

It's a new genre for me but I liked it very much. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
