review 1: Spoilers:In The Trap Door Dak, Riq and Sera travel to 1850. Riq gets captured and on his way to be sold as a slave he meets Kissy, one of his relatives. Riq and Kissy run away into the forest. This is when Riq realizes that this mission will change his family tree and prevent his birth. When Sera finds Riq, he tells her to find him with Kissy on Federal Hill. Riq, Kissy, and her family then run away to meet a boater who will help them escape. When getting on the boat Riq and Kissy’s son James get separated from the group. After a long hard journey, Dak, Sera, James, Riq and a hystorian all meet up at Federal Hill only to be informed that Kissy’s group got recaptured. Riq and his group then decide to go rescue them, but are chained in a room with over a dozen Hystorian ... moreabolitionists. They all escape with the key Dak’s parents gave them. Then the groups ambush the SQ agents that captured them while Sera accidently sees the end of the world. This book was great addition to the series. I liked how they incorporated real abolitionists names into the story. I enjoyed it when Riq, Dak, and Sera visited them in the future since Harriet was expecting them on that exact date. I thought it was funny when the older James said that nobody played the horse game as well as Riq. I think this book represented the time and some of the people well. I’m interested to see where they go next. I just bought the next books at the book fair so I’m ready to keep reading.
review 2: The story was ok, but there were some things that bothered me. It didn't make sense that they could use the flashlight feature of a cell phone under water - wouldn't the phone be broken when it got wet? Also, I was fine when they didn't change the language of the people in the past - I didn't really expect them to try to match the language of all the times and you could sort of rationalize that their translators fixed that. But it irritated me that they had one set of people talk differently in this one - and the only differences were the use of "thou" "thee" and "thy". It just made them sound wrong because the read of the dialogue was modern. I'm also having problems rationalizing how Dak's parents could have given him the key - the timelines just don't make sense with that. less
